Default gas gauge doesnt work

Are there any common reasons for this? Trying to figure out where to start checking before I get into it.

first, take the sender wire off the tank and ground it, the gauge should read past full, if not the sender is bad or the wire, if it reads full, then you have a issue with the gauge. I fired my IVR and have been tracing mine for over a month and its only 2 wires

Is there an "easy way" to get to get to these wires?

What? The sending unit wire? Just crawl your butt under the gas tank and take the wire off the sending unit. Ground it on the chassis and see if the gauge pegs.

Then it's time for a diet fat boy. And, as far as getting the jack out.......now, that is just pure laziness.
