Default Tranny help...well not really HELP

Hey guys. I was just looking around and being bored. Looking into the future of my Mustang. And I was just thinking about engines, trannys, and rear-ends. I know that I want either a 289 or 302, pretty near stock. I don't want it to be crazy, just a nice loud, clean cruiser. I know that with the 289/302, I am going to need a new tranny, suspension, and rear-end. I get the part about the suspension and rear end, but I don't know Ford trannys. Right now, I have a 3 speed tranny on my I6. I don't even know what the name of that tranny is! Anyways, can someone give me the options for a manual tranny when you're going with a V8?

Toploader, T5, TKO and T56. In order of price, roughly... The T5 is an overdrive and will work great behind a mild small block, also you can get them at almost any junkyard. They came in plnety of Mustangs. Just dont get the 4 cylinder ones, make sure its a V8 trans.

Okay, and which is the 3-speed that came standard with the 200?

None of those. The toploader is a 4 speed that came behind Ford V8s. the T5 I already mentioned, the TKO is an aftermarket replacement for the T5 also a 5 speed, and the T56 is the 6 speed that comes in Vipers, F bodys, Corvettes, GTOs, and others. You can get them to fit a Ford but the price is around $3000 for one.

The 3 speed you have is possibly a saginaw. There were toploader 3 speeds, but Im not sure if any were behind 6's in mustangs.

Toploader means the gears and shafts go in through the top rather than the side.

You could also go with a late 70's 4 speed out of a granada or truck. These are like the 3 speeds you have but with an overdrive. The fouth gear is overdriven 20% or has a ratio of .80:1 i believe

Sounds like a T5 is the way to go with a high school student working at Jamba Juice's budget. ...I know my transmission isn't a toploader, so it's gotta be the Saginaw that you were talking about.
