Default Cooling and Suspension

I finally figured out why my Mustang is running hot. The cooling system is full of rust. I flushed it out with a hose, but I can see rust particles stuck in the radiator. I wonder if it can be flushed out with pressure?

I have been having trouble with the steering also. At 65 to 70 mph, it is difficult to keep the car in my lane. My wife drove behind me and said that the rear axel was moving back and forth. Maybe the leaf springs are loose? Has anyone heard of anything like this before?

A good radiator shop can take off the top and bottom of the unit and rod out the tubes. This was a common practice before rads became affordable. They can also do a pressure test on the rad. Do not be suprised if replacing the rad will be cheaper than repairing the one you have. Once you have the rad clean, consider a Gano (or similar) filter that goes into the top radiator hose. Your engine is probably also full of crap that will ruin your new/rebuild radiator.

These are available from some Mustang parts vendors.

If you can visibly see the axle shifting you have a BIG problem. Get that thing on a lift and find out what the problem is and repair it, before you have a wreck! Unless you have a modified suspension, the rear axle is held into lateral position by the rear springs.

I doubt a radiator shop can re-core the old rad for the cost of a new one. Besides, he probably needs to step up to a 4 row rad anyway. Good advice on that screen in the return hose.

I currently have a two row aluminum radiator that is 2" wide. It must be really gunked up if it is still not cooling the car properly. I called my mechanic and we are going to flush out the engine, and I'll see if we can salvage the radiator. Maybe it can get blown out.

The mechanic said that the rear end probably just needs new bushings in the leaf springs to keep it from moving laterally. What do you guys think about a pannard bar?
