Default Package Tray

Hi,

You know that area between the rear seat and the back window, the thing catalogs call the package tray? My question is: In a 66 coupe were speakers installed there? I bought a new "tray" and there are no cutouts for speakers in place. I've looked thru my Mustang Restoration books and cannot find a pic with a clear view of the area. Did Ford install radio speakers there? Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to do this restoration right and if the speakers don't belong then I won't put them in.

thanks,
Snookie

Some dealers installed speakers, but not the factory. the stock speaker is/was on the dash between the defroster ducting. There are now speakers available out there that fit right in there and have nice sound.

They have available an improvement over the single speaker that was always installed in the front with dual speakers.
Not the greatest sound in the world, but better then it was. Any Mustang supply house carries the product. I did what you are thinking about in my Coupe. With the road noise, not much better.

If you plan on showing the car in concours or trailered classes at shows, it is not correct for package tray speakers. If you show in driven classes, workmanship is the issue. If you just want to show locally, I would suggest the dash upgrade and 2 6x9 speakers in the package tray and speaker covers done nicely with some of the available kick panel speakers as an added sound bonus.
