Partial Rear Frame Rail Replacement
Hi,
I am in the process of replacing a 12-14" portion of both rear frame rails. I would think that I should weld in a sleeve between the existing portion and the new piece. Is that the typical way to do it? ANy help would be appreciated. Thanks

glen,
if i understand correctly he is thinking of fillet welding a piece of sheet metal or something to connect the two pieces.
imo,
i would think that just butt welding the new frame rail portion in would be enough to make it strong. im pretty sure that the frame rails are only like 14 ga. so if you just make sure your penetration is good it should be all set.

Ok I bought these to go into the 65 I haven't gotten around to installing them yet. They have been butt welded together and the they have a piece welded over the seam that is about twice as thick. These were originally three pieces that have been welded to become one. I also know there was an article about this in Mustang Monthly a year or so ago. this should give you an ideal of how they should be done. The 65 had originally had pieces replaced that were only (badly) butt welded and you could feel the rear shimmy.

I would think welding a little gusset like piece on both sides wouldn't hurt. Mine rusted arround the rear spring mount but just shy of where it would be major structural problem, so I made a patch to cap the rusted away areas I cleared away. And if it does shimmey I'll just buy the new piece for the rear which if you only buy the back 25" it has a recess to fit into the existing rail giving you a little more to weld on to.
