Is wishihadone listening or are we just playing with ourselves?
'68 was the first year the 429 was offered
it was like the second half of the production year that it replaced the 428. I'm not sure if the 428 was offered in '67.
needing a 9" rear is a given with bigger engines. I'm planning on upgrading to it this month some time and slowly replacing things to prepare my car for the day I pull the 289 out!
Would the suspension for a 289/302 be big enough for a big block? Also what other mods besides rear + transmission are needed?

YA sure about that? I know the 429 was in T birds in the late 60s but only the BOSS version made it into a stang before 71.
In 67 or 68 (cant remember the exact time frame) you could get the 6 cylinder, a 289 or 302, 390 or 427 or 428. 67 was kinda a cross over year as was 68. but the 68 428CJ was about the badest stock non Shellby mustang built. It dominated NHRA Stock and Super Stock for a long time. The BOSS429 was undercammed and had too small of a carb on it, change that, add some headers and you have something that will tattoo a smile on your face and cause the passenger to soil his undergarments.
Whats the biggest engine you can put in a Mustang? well that depends entirely on the year it was built. 64-66 have small engine bays. 68-73 have larger bays that can handle 460s without alot of work. A Fox has enough room for any Ford passenger car engine built since the first flathead V8. The late Mustangs have an engine wider than the BOSS429, so they will accept a huge block as well.
You can also stroke almost any engine to get more CI from it. John Kasse builds 600ci-800ci Fords that arent much bigger than a 460, just a bit taller block.
That is quite the ambiguous question.

The biggest block that will fit in most mustangs post '67 (68-73, and fox body on up) is the 460 block (385 series block), which can be bored/stroked up to 550+ ci's, although with larger boring and strokes and supporting builds, the oiling features of this motor begin to wane, and become very much less reliable on the streets.
