Default floating the valves?

ok, very stupidly i knocked my car into 2nd while doing about 80-90, and i hit the gas etc.... .stupid. ANYWAY, i heard a sound, which i believe would be floating the valves, and then the engine has been popping and surgeing every now and then. but then it stopped. What exactly happens to your engine AFTER you float the valves?

1 of 2 things.

First....nothing happens because you have enough piston to valve clearance for the valve to remain in the open position with the piston at TDC

or

Second....your piston contacts the valve and all hell breaks loose

when I over reved my engine once a rocker arm came off of the push rod causing a missfire I put the rocker back on and adjusted the valves and everthing is fine.

Hmmmm, that could be it... but i just put the valve covers back on, and i REALLY dont feel like taking them off again. BTW, i have a very annoying tick. I dont think it's a rocker arm, and it's not the alternator or water pump. My last two items are a messed up lifter or the exhaust leak over there.

The tick, tick, tick is usually an exhaust leak.
