Default acceleration hesitation

I have a 68 coupe with a 289 v8. The car sat for a better part of 9 years. I got it going fall of 2004 and then it went into the body shop for another year. I finally got it back and back on the road and the engine seems good except for one issue. There is a hesitation when I immediately press on the gas pedal. The harder I press the gas the bigger the hesitation. After it gets going....it goes great. Any suggestions on what could be the problem?

Sounds like you need to tweak the carb. Make sure the idle adjustment screws are turned all the way in, then come back out about a turn and a half or maybe two. You will hear when the engine runs easier. If it is still hesitating when you stomp it, then you may need to change the jets to a slightly larger size. Now, I am assuming we are talkling about after the engine is warmed up so we can assume the choke is all the way open. Also, make sure the engine is idling between 7-800 RPM at idle. If not, then turn the idle adjustment screw in until you reach that RPM.

assuming it ran good when it was parked, It sounds like theres some corrosion inside the carb which may or may not clear out. many times this stuff just needs to be driven out. it could be a stiff power valve, clogged jet, clogged/sticky needle/seat, or most likely just a dirty/stiff accelorator pump and/or discharge nozzle. have you also checked things like points (god forbid you still have them...) and plugs?

I would second the accelerator pump. It has probably dried up and my have even cracked. It will probably get better if it has not cracked, but you can put one in without removing the carb if its the original 2100. They don't cost much.

Had a similiar problem - hestitation is most of the time related to accerlator pump. Usually either clogged or bad diaghram. Make sure you are getting gas out of accerlator nozzle. If you are getting gas could need a larger accerlator nozzle (i doubt that is your problem). You did not mention the type of carb you had. But most likely at one time there was no hesitation - I would proabably replace or rebuild - save your self some grief of playing around with it.

check your distributor. i it isnt tuned right you will have a slight problem starting the car and when you stomp on the gas it will hesitate then all of a sudden take off like a batt out of *#&&. also make sure the idle adjustment is right that does make a big difference
