Default Brake steering...

I have a 1965 Mustang Convertible. It was originally a 6-cylinder car but my dad and I had a 302 put in. Also, the conversion included a C4 swap (from the original 3 on the floor) and a 5 lug axles and spindles. It has manual steering and manual drums all around. When I brake, the car wants to steer sharply to the right. I have no idea why it is doing it. The suspension is the original (41 years old) I-6 stuff. It rides like a 3-ton cadillac (excellent ) which I'm fine with. There is alot of dive when I brake, though. What is causing the car to steer to the right?

I had the same problem before I changed the steering and brakes to V8. more than likely the right front brake is stoping better than the left. The front end does a nose dive when you brake because of the lite 6 springs. You really need to finish the V8 conversion.

we're about to sell it, looking for a fastback, so theyre's no need for that from us...well we are going to upgrade the suspension to shelby-specs, though

Make up up your mind. Are you going to upgrade or not before you sell it?

if your dums are not equal it could be the star adjusters. go forward and hit the break then reverse hit the break and repeat. you will feel the breaks stiffen up

Here is a novel idea, take the brakes apart and see what is wrong.

Now that is radical!!! Be sure to remove the star gear adjuster and work at cleaning it up untill it spins freely. These adjust the brakes when you back up, if one side is not working correctly, you wind up with pulling brakes a short time after a brake job. Several times I've seen brakes that were recently installed by a "professional" that started pulling shortly after the brake job. Often the problem is the adjuster was never cleaned during the brake job.

Also if you see any fluid on the backing plate, you have a bad brake cylinder and fluid gets on the shoes. As far as I know there is no way to clean it. Only option is to replace the cylinder and shoes and make sure every thing is squeeky clean before reassembly. Of course you will also need to bleed the brakes.

Make sure you do both sides as well. The left one might be not functioning properly, causing the R one to pull.
