Default Quarter panel alignment

I coudn't wait for the ice to melt. The quarter panel fitment on my 68 sucked and was probably a crappy aftermarket unit. You can see in the pic what I was up against. The clown who installed it welded the seams and did a crappy job. I ground all the welds inside the quarter window pocket and in all along the front. After they were all separated I noticed this was not going to be easy. I had to drill a hole in the bottom of the panel and insert a breaker bar so I can stand on it. This was the only way I could get the lines close. As I stood on the bar, I temporarily screwed the edges so it would stay. I will spot weld each hole one by one when I am ready. The pic of the quarter with the brake cooler from the back shows the new lines. It is very close now but needs a little more work as does the whole car. It only took me about 2 hours to do this so far. I am just excited that I was actually able to start after a long winter.

that is pretty bad. but you also have some play in the door hinges and striker which may help your fitment.

Wow, is that still snow? Yuck.

Looks like you made good progress fixing your problem though.

Yeah that is pretty bad, best way to fix it is to do it all over again. I know that doesnt sound like a great idea, but if its worth doing, it might as well be done right. If you get it close, who will really notice anyway? Probably just you, it does irk the h3ll out of ya, doesnt it?

You got that right. You would think if a guy were to go through all the trouble of taking on a big job like that he'd do it right.

In most shops getting it done fast is how the tech makes his money. If it pays 2 hours to do it, and he does it in one, he gets double money on it because he can get something else done in the other hour. I didnt like that work enviornment so much, makes people rush too much and not do a good job on it, also promotes comebacks. Not a good thing to have happen.

I have seen horrible body work on alot of cars, the 71 has grinder marks all over the quarters, they were filled with primer but its like a cheese grater in bare metal. I will have a month of block sanding on this thing, just cuz someone didnt use the right tool with the right knowledge and was in a hurry. Eh it was a $20 car, so I can complain alot about it...
