Default Starter issue

I have a 1970 Fastback. Currently it is running a 1986 5.0 with the 50oz. flywheel (manual). The trans. is a '67 3 speed. I have replaced the starter 3 times. It will work fine for a short while then start to grind, but only about every 5-6th start. The starter is the old style starter. I have pulled the motor and replaced the block plate (was not there previously) and installed another new starter at that time. I also inspected the flywheel at that time. It looks good. It does look like the starter teeth are not engaging far enough into flywheel, less than a third of the way. By looking at the marked areas of engagement.

Wheb the starter was removed, I checked it to the newer style at the part store. I could see no physical difference between the two.

My question is: is there a difference between the old style starters and the newer ones? Should I purchase a newer style stater? Of course if I do, I wil have to change the cable, I am aware of that.

If the starter is only engaging about 1/3 of the way on the gear, then the nose of the starter is not long enough. I would try a longer starter such as mentioned.
