Default 9" centre into an 8" housing ?

Hi all,
I have heard from a friend who has just put a 9" lsd centre into his 66 coupe 8" diff housing with some small mods.
Is this a common and problem free practice ?
If it is it may the way to go rather than a complete 9" drum to drum.I believe the axles are the same in both diffs.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks Ron

I doubt if that is worth it, the housings are way different. What monster engine swap will require a 9" for your car?

Ron, unless your friend has a very odd 8" housing, the 9" third member will not physically fit. The bolt pattern is different and the ring gear will actually come in contact with the back of the housing. JMHO , Dean

Apparently there is small machining of the hat required and the 9" centre fits.
I have a 327hp 289 and the one wheeler 8" is just terrible.A waste of good horsepower.
I was advised that an 8" lsd centre wouldn't be the way to go as they are suspect over 350hp and are expensive to rebuild.
That's here in Australia anyway.
The other bonus to installing the 9" is I can order the width I want and will go 1 1/2 " narrower to allow for a bit bigger rubber.
