Default starter or short???

I tried to start my 69 one day and the battery was dead. Got a new battery and it started fine one week later seems like the battery was dead again. I jumped for it about 5 minutes and tried to start it but it just sounded dead. tried 5 minutes later again and on the first turn of the key dead, second turn dead, third turn started right up like a new battery. Could this be the starter? or a short somewhere??
