Default Small Frame rust!

ok, so I bought this 65, actually 64.5 coupe last year and I'm slowly restoring back to factory because its in pretty good shape. It has an original 170 I6 with the functioning Generator etc. Yesterday i was replacing a rusty battery tray, (hadnt rusted through, just trying to do some preventive maintenance) and I found an rusted section in the Frame, just below the battery apron. also the hood on the horn had a hole rusted through it too. actually besides some surface bubbling, this is the first frame rust i've found.

So, Question? What is the easiest way to fix it. its about an 4X4 section on the inside of the frame rail. also, i just found this forum yesterday and it rocks! many props on the helpful content!

I have the same problem below the battery on my 1970 mustang. I have been told to cutout the jagged edges then spray it with the stop rust undercoating black color . After that I am going to pop rivit an aluminum sheet painted with black engine paint. btw my engine bay is black.

There are a few ways to go about it however. Orginally I was thinking about weldng a peice of sheet metal in. I may still do so.

ok so I snapped a picture with my phone. the top of the rail still feels solid after a nice whack with the hammer. As you can see, after i cleaned up the apron a nice coat of primer is always good. let me know what you guys think.

Not a great picture. You might try a better camera. What I can see looks like surface rust. Hit it with a wire wheel, and cover with Eastwood rust encapsulator or POR 15 etc.

Yeah, I have always wondered about those cell phone cameras. I can't tell how much damage has been done by the rust. The rule of the thumb though, is to cut out the cancer about an inch passed it, and weld in new metal. Grind down the weld bead, then hit it with primer, then paint it.

right on, sounds like a good plan. I never really use the cell phone cam because it is so Grainy, but it was convienient etc. Thanks for the advise and I appreciate the time.
