resto purchase
Hello everyone! This is my first post so advance apologies if I commit a posting faux pas during this. When I turned 16 (1988) my Dad bought me a 1969 Coupe (250 straight 6) for my first car. It was a bit of a junker having set in a field for several years. I replaced many things (engine, deck lid, trim, dash pad, etc.) and became educated in the nuances of Mustangs of that period. I have many fond memories of that car but it wasn't in the best shape and I didn't have a lot of money to resore it fully. Long story short, it broke down a lot and I ended up having to sell about 2 years later for something more reliable. Now that I am older and have a little bit more money I am interested in buying a 1965 to 1973 Mustang (my dream car would be 1969/70 Mach 1) but the more I research the more questions that I have. First, is it possible to buy a classic car from this time period for $3-4k that is restorable and if so where should I look?
I realize you get what you pay for, but I hate to pay $10k for something that I have to pump $15k into to restore. All the models that I see on the web or in the paper are always terribly expensive. Are there any years b/w 65 and 73 that I should stay away from? Thanks for any info/advice/criticism that you have.

You should find a pretty extensive list of what you are looking for here: http://forums.vintage-mustang.com/fo...at=&PHPSESSID=
I noticed an A code restomod there for $2900.00 this evening. As far as what to stay away from really depends on what you are looking for, and what you want for an end product. The 64 1/2, 65, 66 in my opinion were the best. The lightest Mustangs ever built. They are wider and longer in 67-68 and continued to grow after that. Of course the power plant options also grew.
Hop over to that site and see if anything is of interest.

I'm in pretty much the same boat, tho I'm just researching at this point.
I like to browse this site as it has quite a variety of classic stangs - Mustang Menu
In particular, I found a 67 coupe there, w/the 289 for $3k. It's been a daily driver for a gal down in TX for some time, i guess. Looks like a good project. Hopefully bein' that it's a tx car, there'll be limited rust on it.
Good luck

You should be able to purchase a project for that amount of money. The trouble is how much are you going to have to put into it to make it what you want. As far as the ones to shy away from, I will tell you that is a personal preference. The 65-66 models have the most replacement parts available for them, followed by the 67-68's,69-70's,71-73's. The 67-up models(71-73 have the most) have more as far as creature comforts being standard(power brakes, adjustable seats,p/s,headrests,collapsible steering columns,etc....)
As always, BUYER BEWARE! Remember, where there is "small rust spots" there is always more lurking. Good Luck in your search and post back the results(if any).
