Stupid Cali Emissions
So I've been working on getting the Cali Emissions off as well as the air conditioning unit and it looks to me like when I pull them off the pulleys and belts arent going to have anything to hold on to. What's going to happen if I unbolt these things? Are my pulleys just going to fall down? Do I need a bracket or anything to replace the a/c and emissions?
Sorry Flat Tire, I can't help you with the emissions removal as I don't have to , nor have I ever had to deal with that Kali emissions crap. I would think you could get the correct pulleys and such from any vendor. Do some research. Obviously, you are going to have to plug off some vacuum ports. Just use some common sense. "If it ain't needed, plug it."
Did you know that if your engine produces more than 90 HP you can't even tell the difference in driving or fuel mileage with the air injection pump on or off? Unfortunately for the poor sap stuck behind in your fumes, s/he can sure tell once you've removed it.
Did you also know that if you get caught without the original air polution control devices, you can face a pretty stiff fine, and then have to put it all back on?

Hi Tyler, better double check that. I haven't found a state yet, that says you can remove emission control devices for on road, licenced vehicles. Most do not require periodic inspections prior to specific years. However, in my search I've found there are laws stating you can be fined for removing emission controls, and that has been pretty consistent for the 20 or so states I've checked.
An easy way to find out is contact your local police station, and ask them what the law is regarding removal of emissions related components, on street licenced vehicles.
More importantly, by removing the air injection pump, you are emitting a more concentrated level of HC, and CO. Neither of which are good for you, or the people in the car behind you to be breathing. And you will not notice any gain in performance, unless you've got a an enemic engine to begin with.

Oddly enough, no checks on cars before 74' in Cali. Mine has been gutted and just registered it last month, no problem. It does smell bad though. No way I am putting it back on tough, what a waste of time and effort that would be!

Just my opinion though
Scott is right TECHNICALLY they can fine you for anything that has to do with pollution control if it came stock. Here Illinois we dont have any checks or emissions tests and just about every Fox body has an off road H pipe with no cats. They CAN be fined for not having cats, but no one cares, they dont get under your car like in cali and stuff.
As far as removing the cali emissions....if your state didnt requre anything on that year/make in your state originally (I.E. smog pump, that kind of stuff) then I don't think you can be fined because if a cop pulls you over hes not going to decode your cars VIN and say it was a cali car wheres your emissions stuff at even tho it is a legal car for that year.
So basically with the Cali emissions crap on your legal in ALL 50 states. With it off your only legal in 49.

Did they have smog pumps back then? If so, that alone would rob some HP. I have always understood that emissions controlled engines were more sluggish than engines that were free of all that.
