Default Fuel milage.....

I am buying a 67 coupe which is being driven by a 289ci. v4 and a C4 tranny.....but I am driving it home about 500 miles. Not what I really wanted to do, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

But my real question is....the dataplate give a code 0, which from my research is a 2.79:1 rear axle ratio, but I am not sure if 2 owners ago swap any gears, but none the less.

Does anyone know if 2.79:1 ratio does pretty good with gas milage? Because with the gas prices the way that they are, if those gear suck the full something bad, then I guess that I will just have to go another route.

Thanks,
Tony

a 2.79 is the best you're going to get for mileage. try to cruise slow, about 55-60, it helps alot. If you have taller rear tires put them on for the trip too.

taller tires let the engine spin slower. I haven't figured out which gears our mustang has but it gets between 10 and 15 mpg, but it has a 4bbl, cam and a bunch of vacuum leaks, and I know that cruising above I think it was 70 you could watch the fuel gage go down...

Thanks for all the input........I drove 525 miles on 3 fill-ups!!!!! I didn't think that was too bad for 60 to 70mph. I can't tell you the actual fuel milage because I was up for about 40 hours straight......and I couldn't remember to write down the miles or the amout that I put in.

Tony,
The 2.79:1 ratio rearend is about the best you are going to get, as far as mpg is concerned. Take into accout that in 1967, V8's with a 4v never really get great gas milage. My 65 has the same V8 with a 4v (some engine mods) has a 3:00:1 rearend, and gets about 22-24 at 60-65 mph on the back roads.
Something to remember, from a dead stop, acceleration is a pig until you get up around 40-45 mph. Then it hits its power band and kicks ***.

22-24? with the length he drove and the number of fill ups he's getting about 15(unless he filled up when the tank was no where near empty), which is what our '67 gets, but with the 3 speed auto it's running at a high rpm at those speeds, but since it's just a cruising car, it doesn't really matter what mileage it gets
