I just did change the oil with some of that High Mileage ENgine oil, dont know if it really works, but since i changed it over i havent heard the noise since. I usually run Lucas oil products so i guess that would be like the Marvel. Also, a stock 1968 289 is a solid lifter motor correcT?
No, only the K code engines have solid lifters. Your's are hydraulic.

Hey Brandon -

I have a '66 289 V8 3-spd and it is behaving very similar to yours. Have you noticed a drop in power\acceleration with your situation? I feel like my car is substantially more sluggish since I noticed the increased noise.

Cheers,

Ziggy

Your lifters are collapsing, which will give you less lift on the cam and change the timing events. Which, in turn, lowers the power output of the engine. Flush the engine to get the gunk out and put in a good oil. But, it really is time to start thinking rebuild.

Yeah, there comes a time when these mechanical devices just finally wear out. They don't do it all at once, but they will eventually just completely quit running. Get her overhauled.

Thanks y'all.

This is surprising inasmuch as this engine only has 60,000 miles on it. The car did, however, sit for quite a long time unused (but exposed) which wasn't too kind to it.

Anything else I should look for when taking it apart?
