Default gas cap toruble

Hey guys,
I'm new here and I just bought a '68 mustang

It's my first car.

Anyways, I was at a gas station the other night and some suv lightly rear ended me. The only damage done was to the gas cap (phew).
So no paint or bumper damage. So, I ordered a new gas cap but unfortunately this one is not a (pop-off) one like my other one. I was thinking about returning it to get the right one, but It probably isn't a big deal. My only question is, how do I attach the security cable?

Thanks a lot.

Congrats on the new ride.. Pics of the old one would help. I think the cable gets mounted to one of the screws holding the flange to the rear panel.

Great car. Get a gallery up as soon as you can. I noticed that you said it's your first car. How old are you?

Here is a pic of the one on my 65. Not sure if they are the same though. But, they should be similar. The cable has a bolt that has a nut on the inside of the trunk to hold it on.

Thats the same way it mounts on my 68. It may me a little aggravating to get the cap lined up right when you first install it. I don't know if I said that right, but I'm sure you'll see what I mean when you start to install it.
Thats a great looking car BTW.

Yeah, the trick is to wrap the cable on the inside of the cap , then put the cap on the inlet as if it were closed, then gently take the cap off and see where the bolt lines up with the hole so that the cap is aligned correctly after you install it.

Because he already has the one with the cable, and it is a PITA to return the cable one to get a pop off. Personally, I think Mustang came up with a great filler cap with the cable one. How many times have you left a screw on cap at the pump, then about 5 miles down the road remembered you left the cap at the station? Been there, done that.

Hey thanks for the help, I put the cap on no problem after seeing that pic. Everything is lined up right.
By the way, I'm 17. I always wanted a classic mustang (don't really like any other besides the '60's), so I got a job, saved up and bought this one.
