Default Disconnecting Engine from Trans

Hey Guys,
I've run into a snag in trying to pull my engine. It's a 302 with a manual transmission (T-5). Everything is loose, motor mount bolts out, and I've pulled the six bolts out of the engine/bell housing... two on top, two on each side and the two smaller bolts on the bottom.

However, I hooked up the engine hoist, picked the engine up a bit and tried to pull outward and the engine is not coming loose from the transmission. I've dropped it back down and rechecked to make sure I didn't miss any bolts, and don't see any.

Any clues as to what I'm missing? Thanks a bunch!! It's getting dark and supposed to rain tomorrow, so I'm getting in a bind.

Pull the transmission with the engine in the car if you are not going to pull the transmission with the engine. You will need a transmission jack or gorilla arm muscles to do that. You have an angle problem, and the tranny will bind if it is not loose from the mount.

So, are you saying, if I put my jack under the trans, then undo the trans mounts, then it'll let the trans come up enough so it doesn't bind?

Yes. You obviously need to disconnect the drive shaft, back up light and anything else connected to the tranny such as the cooling line if you have an automatic with that line, but yeah, use some common sense and get everything disconnected, then pull the engine and the tranny together, or disconnect the tranny fully from the engine before pulling the engine.

Good question rmodel, I just about to ask that too. Yes you need to support the trans when you pull the engine. If you don't want to pull the engine and trans together you might want to drop the trans from the car first. I've found that to be much easier.

Thanks rmodel and 67...

Yep, I had pulled the starter. Turned out to be nothing more than binding. I already had the jack under the trans good and snug, to keep it from falling when the engine come loose. But I went back and loosened the trans mount bracket and jacked up on the trans to try and give it more of an uphill slant, and the engine pop right out after that.

I was leaving the trans in cuz I just wanted to pull the engine so I could bolt it up to my engine stand. Guess I could've pulled both (engine/trans), lowered em, then took em loose and then picked the engine back up and mounted it to the stand.

But, this is my first time at this and just learning as I go. Hopefully once I see how it all works once through, I might actually be able to use some of that common sense the next time around!!

You can do it either way. If you pull it with the trans you have to tilt the engine trans at a drastic angle to get it out. They sell a thing called a load leveler that will allow you to change the angle while you are pulling but not everyone has one. With out one it can be really hard to pull both together.
