Default Headers to exhaust

I got a set of ceramic coated shorties 1 5/8 inches going on a 351W with a holley 750 should I go with 2 1/2 inch pipes or 3 inch, mufflers or cherry bombs? I want low end torque and a great sound I have cherries now and I like the way they sound but there only 2 inch pipes...thanks for your input!

2.5 inch exhaust, 3 is for big power engines. A Cherry Bomb will sound okay for a while, but then you'll probably get tired of the noise, so I say go with the mufflers (Flowmaster 40-Series).

The idea is to get as much flow from the exhaust as possible without interfering with the back pressure necessary to produce good power. You need to start with the heads, move to the intake, then the carb, then the headers, then to the exhaust. All that stuff has to be matched to get optimum performance. Just putting on a 4 barrel intake and carb will net some HP difference, but will get bogged down at the exhaust manifolds and exhaust system. 2 1/2 inch pipes are quite adequate for most street rods.

I'd do the 2.5" exhaust through Flowmaster Series 40 mufflers. . . . . . . . wait, that is what I did and it sounds GREAT. Oh yeah, I did an H-pipe also.

Why an H-pipe? I heard you lose torque when adding an H pipe and that it sounds European...(not an accent either!)

u need it to equlize pressure in the two exhaust pipes......u got it backwards i believe....an X-pipe is even better performance but apparently does sound "european".....i have an X-pipe and it sounds VERY VERY VERY American if you know what i mean......
