Right and if you get the tranny from the right guy, it will be upgraded with new AOD parts that will allow it to handle up to 400 HP without issues.

ORIGINAL: THUMPIN455

$400 is about the going rate for 3 speeds. Sure the C5 has a locking converter but you wont gain that much mileage from it. Maybe 1-2 mpg highway and none to very little in town. Also making a swap between the C4 and C5 work isnt a simple swap. If you want to burn less gas, get an AOD and have it set up properly. Why have $800 in a C4/C5 trans when an OD isnt much more, if any.

A near stock 289/302 isnt going to hurt an AOD.

Thanks amigos, Ive got 2 C4 transmissions for a 69 he installed someparts to make one of the c4's a c5, so it will still ahve the same tooling, 400 isnt bad but I did have my eyes on a 351W with a C6 (only 32000) original miles and it cranks up like a pro for 800$ but we'll ahve to see...

Shoot me a PM if you need any internals (other than your basic rebuild) - I've kept in touch with my old teacher from school 8 years ago and he lets me buy trannies from the school if I need one. They're not rebuilt, and need work - but I tear them down and see if the hard parts are good. If they're good - I'm good. Last time I paid 20 bucks for a C4 - and 30 for a C6. The C6 is in a 450 hp 351 and the C4 is in a 400hp (75 shot) 307. If you need any hard parts I can always run to the school and see if he has anything you need. I wouldn't mind picking up a few T-5's and another C4 for myself.

The trannies usually come from dead-dogs or cars that were in accidents. Donated by insurance companies for the school. I don't know much about newer trannies, I only went there for my own personal knowledgebase.

Hey Ninja,

Im in college but ive got a nice internship (by nice, I mean Ive got a bit of spending cash), and Im restoring a 67 coupe. The transmission is a 3 speed auto and its leaking from the gaskets, so they need replacing. Im interested in the possibilities of replacing it with a 4 or 5 speed manual, or possibly add in an AOD, but I dont know all of the parts needed to do the switch, Im having trouble finding an affordable 4 or 5 speed tranny to replace it with (all the shops around me overchange insaine amount because these tranny's are somehow EXTREMELY rare or some bs), and I havent been given a good quote by any of the tranny shops around me either (they will only quote me, which is a VERY steep amount, and then not tell me what goes into it or the cost of the parts, which i find shady). You seem to know a bit about these types of procedures. You think you could give me some advice and point me in somewhat the right direction. By the way the motor in the car is a bored out .40 over 289 with a performance Edelbrock carb and flowmaster straightpipes incase that info is needed for which tranny I should use. Thanks for anything you can help with with in advance,

Mike

Hey Thin! If you don't plan on making any serious performance mods to her - you can easily go with a standard T-5. It is rated to 330 Ft lbs of torque - Taller gears and a set of slicks with that much torque will surely break it. Although I've heard they can handle less/more - I'd rather be on the safe side. You can go with a Tremec T-5 (a bit more expensive) but it has imroved gear ratios, forks and a one-piece countershaft (unlike the Borg Warner) and a 31 spline output vs a 28 on the standard T-5. All you need is a T-5 conversion kit (crossmember, slip-yoke, yada yada yada) not sure about the 289 (sadly I've never had the chance to work on one) but you may need a different bell housing? I don't know if it will be a direct bolt-up without some modifications to the housing. I'm assuming it's the same (anyone shed some light on the 289 for me on this?) You should need no interior modifications or new linkage or anything of the like to install. It will bolt right up with everything that's on your 67.

When I start my project I'm going with a Tremec T-5 slapped on a 306. She'll be my "5.7 Liter Eater" lol.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, and yes it does help a lot. Ive seen some conversion kits that include an extention that might make the bell housing fit like you were talking about. Im going to do some more research on it, but right now my biggest plight is finguring out EVERY part that im going to need to do the conversion because I dont want to get half way through and realize i need to order something else. Has anyone done this conversion before and have some notes or a parts list left over that they wouldnt mind sharing? Thanks again for the help ninja, youve definitely set me in the right direction

Bell housing and new Fulcrum for your T-5. I'm going to run into the same issues when the time comes.
