Distributor: Points vs. No Points
I put a duraspark setup on an old truck I had once. It worked fine and all, but I just couldn't tell any difference in it worth puttin it on. I also think the controller box looks tacky.
This looks like the cat's meow to me. The distibutor, module and coil all in one unit. It sure would clean up the engine bay.

I converted mine to a complete Duraspark set up a while ago. It works great and is easy and cheap to get parts for. I recently picked up a Pertronix conversion and a Mallory Duralite conversion for a stock distributor. Just for the heck of it, I plan to swap them into my old points distributor and compare them to the Duraspark system.
doesnt the duraspark system have a reputation for dying if it gets hot? Im not familiar enough with the system to know. I just bought a pertronix I system, but have yet to actually install it in the car. (engines still on a stand in the garage) it was stupid simple to install and for the price I would think its about the best thing out there.
Yeah, for less than 70 bux, it's the best bang for the buck I would think. And, yes....it takes less time to put in the module than it takes to install new points and gap them if all you do is follow the directions. But, as discussed many times here, running a 12volt line from the ignition is a safer bet than running straight to the + side of the coil.
If you are going to significantly increase the HP go with an aftermarket distributor. I am running almost 200 HP over stock and sheared the shear pin on the distributor gear last Hot Rod Power Tour. I like the pertronix, however your stock distributor is then the weak link.
That's true John. However, I have heard from guys who have been running just the pertronix module for many years now without a problem. But, they weren't racing their Mustangs either. I would thingk that if you are a racer, then you would automatically change the dizzy to a performance one anyway.
Yeah, I have my points in the tool box in the trunk. I put in the pertronix a few months back, and (knock on wood) have not had a problem with it yet. The 289 starts and runs much better than it ever has. In fact, it starts so quick, I don't even hear the starter turn over.
lol. mine does start faster but still not that fast.
