Default Distributor: Points vs. No Points

Im doin a restoration on a 67 coupe with a 289 and a few engine mods (bore, exhaust, carb, etc.). Im not looking to race it or anything but i was thinking of going with the electronic distributor instead of the classic points. it needs to be replaced either way, so does anyone know the pro's and con's of each one, and which brands I might want to check out?

You say your distributor needs replacing? Look into the pertronix system. Get a stock dizzy and the pertronix module and flamethrower coil. Any way you go, do not go back to the points. That is the weak link in the ignition system.

if you do get a Pertronix, keep a set of points and a condensor in the glove box, just in case. There is nothing like having a hot rod part fail in Podunk, Iowa and the local speed shop has more tractor parts than car parts....

Yeah, I have my points in the tool box in the trunk. I put in the pertronix a few months back, and (knock on wood) have not had a problem with it yet. The 289 starts and runs much better than it ever has. In fact, it starts so quick, I don't even hear the starter turn over.

I also have petronix for over a year with no problems..but I carry an extra set in case I need , cost a little more that a set of points but is much faster to replace on the road.

Could you still run the stock coil with the pertronix, or would that defeat the purpose? I still have the stock yellow top coil.

they do better with a hotter coil, buy their black coil, and spray paint the top using "school bus yellow"

Yes you can, but then you won't be able to gap the plugs wider than 0.032 or so if you don't use the flamethrower coil.

Is that (coil and spark plugs gap) for the petronix II??? I have the "old" petronix version with a regular coil and works great..(I don't remember the gap on my plugs I have to chek that)

Has any of you gone the route of a duraspark? I am completing the change over in mine along with an MSD 6AL & Blaster2 coil.
