ignition switch delemma
My car is a early '73. As I turn off the car it runs...switch is good since when I removed the wheel, lock assembly, I see the sliding unit down there and i can position it either to be NO IGNITION, IGNITION or under spring pressure it activates the starter. I wonder if there is a missing part between the part that protrudes from the lock assemby and that lower part that is attached to the switch. Maybe someone knows a link that shows all the parts in there. The lock assembly part that protrudes has a squashed "O" shape at its end. Thanks for your help!!! Bob
So what your saying is that when you start the car the starter will not disengag...and even if you turn it off and take the keys out it still runs? So you have to disconnect the battery to shut it off? If this is correct, and you've replaced the switch and it still does it, replace the solenoid, or look for shorts going from your ignition switch to your solenoid to your starter.
no.....when problem 1st occurred I had to disconnect coil and battery to stop car. There is a "disingagement" between the lock assembly and the switch assembly now. I turn the lock and nothing happens. How does the lock mechinism work with the switch mech? I realize the gear turns as the lock does to cause a protrusion to move in and out. How does protrusion connect to the switch plate.? When I removed the lock assembly..I can move the switch mech in and out and everything works. Starter, ignition, access. But, there is no contact between the lock mech and the switch mech. Maybe there are parts missing or broken. Does anyone have a link to a parts schematic of whats in there?
Does the starter try to engage after you turn it off or does your car just run when you shut it off?
Does the switch spring back to its original position after you turn it to the start position when you have it out?

I found it and post it for others…the slider is made of bronze. A small protrusion closest to the driver fits inside the “O†of the lock mech. I drilled a hole in the bronze exactly where it was about 1/16†and almost went through it. Inserted a ground clean Allen wrench about ½†long. It was pounded in so tight. Then soldered it, as would one sweating a pipe. Works great…..Bob
