Default ter) First test drive with coolant problem

Hi,
Today I didi my first test drive and it ended with the followng problem.[:@]
With cold engine(cold water) everything was ok but when the engine got hot, water came out of the tube which is connected to the radiator and which is to get rid of too much water.The hot water came out with high pressure.I refilled the radiator with 3 Litres of water.
Now my question : is this due to a thermostat which doesn't work or is it the waterpump or something else ????
Engine is the 289

Best regards from Luxembourg
Robert

3 liters came out? that sounds like a lot. did the water temp get really hot or just normal?

@usmcdevilmp,
The water temp was getting hotter, so I stopped the engine.After it was cooled down I refilled the system with 3Litres.

how old is your thermostat? it could be stuck and thats why your temp is going up. id change it.

I don't know how old the thermostat is because I bought the car last week.
I will start with the thermostat because everything works fine with cold engine and there is no white dust coming from the exhaust, so I don't think that the gasket between the cylinderheads is gone.

Hey bones.....I used to be your neighbor. I worked for the DOD and was stationed at Spangdahlem, Germany. I ahve been to Luxembourg many times. It's a really beautiful country. Now, about your overheating.....
1. Take out your thermostat altogether and make sure your radiator is full as well as the block. Run it up the road and see if it overheats again. If it does, then we can eliminate the thermostat as a problem. I also suggest you get an overflow tank to catch that water that comes out when it gets hot. Get back to us after you have eliminated the thermostat for now. You can put a new one in later.

@Soaring,
I will try the thermostat next week and post the result.
15 years ago I worked for the US Army in Luxembourg.I was often in Baumholder and K'town.

Best regards
