Just out of curiosity Scott.....what other "freon" is there other than the 134? I just had my old truck changed over from the R-12 last week, and the Mustang changed over to 134 a few years ago. I was given no other choice because the R-12 is no longer available. Is there another option other than 134?

You might look into this company for a/c options. They appear to have various models to choose from at a reasonable price. However, I haven't found much info about them from searching the net or within other forums.

Getting hot here in east Texas and thinking about some sort of a/c unit myself. If you or anyone else have info on the Rainbow a/c folks, please post your comments....good luck!!!

Glen, I think the only type of freon is R-12 and R-134. I have never seen any other before.

During the change over from R12, there were all kinds of different mixes of reduced content CFCs (at least out here in California). R134a requires a greater pressue differential to cool as effectively as R12. All the new systems are designed for this. However, just changing from R12 to R134a in an old system was not as efficient, and a lot of people complained that the car did not cool as well (rightfully so). Some of the interim mixes did a better job of cooling the car, than did a direct change over to R134a. You used to be able to go into your local "Pep-Boys" or Kragen and buy a kit that came with the refridgerant and a special set of adapters to denote that type of refridgerant.
Today you would be hard pressed to find any of the interim gas mixes as they still contained CFCs (except for maybe outside California, where the laws aren't quite as stringent).
Google R12 and you should be able to find information on the transitional period, as well as it's availability, and what it does to the earth's "bald spot". Pensoil was one brand I remember that had a "special mix" refridgerant kit.
