Default Rack and pinion steering

I've heard of using junkyard steering racks to upgrade the steering on 66 Mustangs. Anybody know how to do it economically, or would it be cheaper to go with a kit? If there is a way to beat the $1200 kits it would be worth a little effort.

I have heard of guys using the Mustang II front suspension and rack in classic Stangs, it can be done.
