hey guys.. im interested in buying a stang which is currently equiped with a vinyl top. i'm not the biggest fan of them myself... how remove-friendly are they? how easy or cost friendly is it?

if you remove the vinal top be prepared for possible rust, welding shut of the 1/4 trim holes, and stripping of all the old glue. i guess a good answer to your question is not very friendly in either situation. oh yeah, dont forget the repaint......good luck[:'(]

haha no no that sounds good.. im just wondering how realistic it is to perform.. not my highest of priorities.. but had me wondering

when u say quarter trim holes, u mean like where the chrom moldings bolt to the car near the quarter panels???


is this osmething he could do in his garage/driveway basically???

yes, exactly. this job is very diy friendly for the weekend bodyman thats not affraid of a little welding and or rust repair, all i can say is i have had personnal exp in this and the one we did the only thing holding the roof skin together in one spot was the vinyl roof!

i'm not too experienced in body work... what sort of welding would need to be done? (tools etc)

well are you planning on repainting the entire car over again?? if so then it wont be that big of a deal. but just painting the roof might be a headache to color match the paint already on the car and with age the paint does fade.

If you are lucky, there won't need to be any rust repair. The first spot the vinyl roofed Mustangs that will rust first is the indention on the back of the roof just before the roof hits the rear glass. Just rip that sucker off with a box cutter and muscle. Use a sander to get her down to bare metal. Prep it with self etching primer, use 400 grit sandpaper, then prime it again. After that use a brown grocery sack for the final sanding. Laugh if you want, but that brown bag has just enough grit to make it smooth as a baby's butt. Then it's time for color.
