I kept forgetting but this thread reminded me and I just called the shop that rebuilt my engine. According to the owner, hardened valve (exhaust) seats were installed. He said I could get gas anywhere -- even though the higher octane doesn't cost me more -- and said just to be sure to change the oil after the first 500 miles.

He also said hardened or not, no additive would have been needed.

Yeah the use of lead substitutes in these old cars with soft seats has been a controversy for years now. I use it, and I feel good about it. I figure it won't hurt, and it may do some good.

hey Clutch, why dont you do your heads yourself and save you some money???? Just drill out the out bolts, and go out and rent a tap and die. or even buy a small set. I did the heads on my 67 F-100. It wasn't too hard. It was actually alittle fun, and i felt great when it was all finished. Oh and Pammie. That guy is wrong. if you dont have hardened seats, you should use a lead additive, or it'll tear up your seats, and then you will start losing compression, smoking, etc.
I'm kinda scared of fudging it up! I may try to do this myself tho. Pops has got a tap and die set in his workshop in the basement (we got's no garage). Hmmm, maybe I can get them to let me have the other section of the basement for all my stang stuff? Ah, should prolly clean my room before I ask them that, cause they'll tell me to anyway! LOL! Any clue what size bolts those are?

EDIT: Any tips on how to tell if my seats are hardened? What type of additive should i use (when i get her running again)?
