Default Emergency Brake

So the other day before I got pulled over I let my mom drive it and about a mile down the road I remembered that the e-brake was on. Now it didn't seem to be any different driving than with it off, so how can I check this? And is the brake light supposed to be on when the handle is pulled and the key is turned over?

the lights are not supposed to go on whn the e break handle is pulled. also it really doesnt make a difference when your driving. the barking breaks arnt really that great. they are just ment to keep the car from rolling down a slight incline

The brake light switch is not attached to the emergency brake, so it has nothing to do with your brake light on the instrument panel. If your emergency brake is not working, then you need to adjust your rear shoes, and check the E brake with the drums off to see if the cable is not frozen.
