About to give up.
well considering i paid a grand and had someone randomly drive up the other day and offer 5K for after i told him the motor and trans both were shot (hehe!). i was like, "ummmm, NO!"
i hear ya. i make 10/hr working part time ~30 hours a week and commute to school monday-friday about 150 miles round trip. atleast for me i can stash away 25-50$ a week to buy parts for my car. and once im done cleaning out our garage and moving my dad's nova to one side i will have my 67' in the garage to build up the chassis and prep it for paint.
the worst part about working outside is taking the time to cover the car when your done just to find that the bare metal has rusted the next time you go back to it.[:@]
once i graduate and get a job doing collision work i hope to buy some land and build a nice big garage and concentrate solely on restoration work while keeping my current part time job. (can't beat the benefits and free health and dental)
good luck with your car it gets better and better the more you work on it (mines a freak like yours)

yeah, it could, but as much of a basket case as mine is, it's still got snot loads of sentimental(sp) value. anyone know a quicker way to remove bondo than with a wire brush?
If you dont have time or money, you should see if that guy would still pass you 5 grand. You need tons of both to get the job done. Mine is in ok condition and I can take it out, but like you, Ive tried to do a few small things and uncovered some major stuff. Major enough that I'll have to put it up for a good long time before it's finished and driveable again. (I work 7 days a week...) I don't know whether to just patch it a little so I can drive it or to start in on it big time. I'm torn. Oh and i have another "project" in the other garage bay, so if I tear the stang down I wont have an empty bay to do repairs/maint on our dailies.....

Clu7ch..I been there several times and even do is not easy, sometimes you have to know when to walk away from a project. Stop working on it for a few days, think about it and you will get the right answer of what to do.
Im kinda in the same boat as you, I work part time for $9 an hour and trying to goto school when I can. When I found out I had rust in the rear quarter panels, how much the front end was gonna cost + and entire paint job just for looks, not counting the disc brakes, suspension possible new rear end I was about to give up and sell my car. But then I went to looking and there are cars in worse shape than mine for about $1000 cheaper I decided to keep it because then later on down the road and can say "yeah I added that, or replaced that, or fixed that, etc". And the satisfaction of putting it off til I have money is going to be well worth the wait. (And Ive been keeping up with prices and talking to people, classic car prices in any condition are generally going up so push come to shove I can get alot more than Ive spent outta it in the future)
Hang in there bossman! I think most of us at one time or another go through tough financial times at one point or another. I mowed yards on the side for 3 years back in the late eighties after I went thru a divorce. And I'll bet you'd be surprised how many of us have started with the same bondo bucket. I bought my car for $1100 and hauled it back to Louisiana from Mississippi on a dolly. Lots of bondo, rear frame rails in the trunk completely rusted out with leaf spring shackles hanging. No transmission mount or driveshaft, one fender beyond repair, both qtrs rusted out around the wheels, outer and inner wheel wells rusted through, floor pans rotted out, engine needing an overhaul, fronnt rails and engine compartment rusted out and everything inside and out caked with dirt and thick grease.....[:@] Its been one year since and it looks a lot different now. Got another 6-8 months before it'll be painted and reunited with a rebuilt engine.

please tell me your not doing it by hand!!!! get an angle grinder with a a 4 1/2 blade and you can smooth it down much faster. just dont get carried away...walmart has them for 40 bucks or something
