Installing floor pans. Support question, all or some?
Replacing the floor pans in my 66. No cowl issues, mut have sat with the windows down or something. Typical rot. My seat supports are finally out and in reusable condition. I have both full length floor pans in hand. Under the seats are not that bad. Actually pretty solid. So I'm looking at it and thinking about cutting the old out then it hits me. Is my car going to fold in half when I cut these puppies out? Maybe at least I should do one at a time. For consistencey and smoother appearance underneath, (like it matters, I'm not in any mirror bottom shows) I figureed on using full length pans. Which like I said, I have. For rigidity or whatever other reasons, should I cut up my pans and make front and rear partials? Or should I just cut them out and replace the whole thing with nice and new? Tunnel is good and I know you would like pictures. I'm talking general scenario for now as a general rule of thumb or common practice. Also, what about center overall car support. Do I need to do anything special if I cut one at a time out completly. Other than the obvious frame rails, gas/brake lines, avoidance etc. I'm talking about supporting the car so it does not fold or twist.
you could always cut out the bad spots and just patch, but if you're going thru the trouble, IMO, just replacing the whole thing is better. best bet is to find a rotissery.
Yeah, a rotisserie would be the way to go if all the running gear and suspension has been removed. If not, then replace one complete floor pan at a time. If you already have the complete floor pans, use them.
What about any support in the process? One at a time I mean. The car is complete with running ear, etc. I just dont want any surprises. Physically, with the bends, rocker, hump, etc, it looks like it would be fine. Never cutting one out completly, having the rail totally exposed makes for the question. Thanks so far and after looking some more, I am using the whole pan. I just did not want to weaken it by doing so.
braces are always a good idea for this, IMO, even on a rotiserie. the thing is placement. you can put braces in the best possible spot and they could mess you up when you go to replace the pans. like soaring and i said, you got both pans, you might as well use them. it'll save you a little bit of a headache, even though it does seem easier to just patch the bad spots. they did that in mine and now i have to rip out the pans and redo them cause they did a bad job.

I have never met a person that was sorry they did it right the first time.
If in doubt.....go overboard!

the rockers are plenty strong enough to support the car as is the roof (providing the car is not a conv.) use good jack stand and make sure the car is level...and cut way! I had no problems on my mustang when i cut the complete floor out door opening to door opening and in frnt of the rear seat risers! If it is a convertable go to the local yard and buy some steel and weld ends on it that will bolt into place on the hinge post and tack it into place under the latch area it will support it fine also!
