289 inline 6
Does anyone know what kind of power the 289 inline 6 engine in the 65 stang can put out? I just bought a 65 classic stang and i want it to have power becasue to me the classic mustang stand for the muscle cars of the 60's. I want to make sure to have that power. So if anyone has any ideas let me know.
The 289 is a V8, and there are three of them. The C code puts out about 200 HP, the A code puts out just over 220 HP and the K code puts out about 270 HP. If you have a 6 cylinder, most likely it is a 200CID engine with right at 120 HP.
You not only have a 6 cylinder engine, all the rest of the car was built around that engine. In order to upgrade to an 8 cylinder engine, you will need to replace the front suspension to a V8 suspension with 5 lug bolt spindles. The rear end will also have to be replaced with 5 lug axles and either an 8" or a 9" rear. Right now, you have a 7.5" rear and will not stand the power of the V8. That is just a thumbnail of what you will have to replace in order to put a V8 in there. It can be done, and has been done, but you will need a lot of skills. If you have never worked on cars before, just drive that 6 banger until it folds.
You can also heat up that 6 banger with some upgrades for it. Go to this site to see how. http://www.fordsix.com

I have done some work on some cars. I just have never ,until now, worked on a classic. The thing is, is it isn't running now and I have already pulled the engine out to have it rebuilt by my friend over at the local car quest. I am just wondering what i could expect to get from the engine.
Like I said, a stock inline 6 will produce about 120 horsepower at the flywheel. If you go that site I gave you, you can put on some mods that will give you considerably more horsepower from your engine.

If you have the weak 3 speed manual trans. I would do the conversion to a V8 other wise the slightest pressure on that trans and it will blow up. been there done that.

In 65 and 66 Ford put a different weaker 3 speed on the 6 bangers. In 67 they wised up and started using the same trans thats on the V8's. hereis a pic of the 6 banger trans I 'm tring to get rid of on ebay. I spent $1000.00 on it when I blow it up the first time only to have it blow again shortly after I got it back, because on rust clogging the fuel filter. The car bucked and the trans blow. Thats what I call weak.
