289 inline 6
I ran into the same problem with my '65 200 CID 16 years ago. After discussions with a tranny builder who stated that the 3 speed in the 6 cyl was the worst he had ever seen Ford build, I made to move to convert to a C4 from a junkyard '70 Mustang. Just recently had to have it rebuilt, and strengthened as I adding cam and Offenhauser multi carb system Have never regretted the swap. If your really want to stay with a manual, for the most part everything I have read on the fordsix performance site on the T-5 has been positive. If I were to start anothe 6, I'd give strong thought to going that route.

I have done some work on some cars. I just have never ,until now, worked on a classic. The thing is, is it isn't running now and I have already pulled the engine out to have it rebuilt by my friend over at the local car quest. I am just wondering what i could expect to get from the engine.

Probably the biggest downfall to the 200 I-6 is the head, and stock carburetor. It just doesn't flow. How much time and money do you have? I've done a few 2 barrel conversions to the original head. That seemed to help. Not hard to do, and doesn't cost much if you can find a carb cheap. On the exhaust side there is a plate you can weld in that seperates the two center cylinders, so they don't polute each other. Then polish out the exhaust ports. There really isn't a lot of room for porting, but you can smooth things out, and that is pretty much free to do.
Here's a good web site for the 6 cylinder enthusiast:

My suggestion from years of experience. Don't get sucked in to spending money on the 200. Make it run reliably. Do anything you can to improve performance on the cheap. Then plan for a V8 down the road.
The T5 is an excellent, but expensive option. The good side is it works great with a V8 too, so it's not a total waste of money.
Here's a picture of mine set up for the I-6. Been in for just about a year now.
Good luck,

I have a good sized budget for this project. Oh just to let you know soaring I have checked out that website you post yesterday thanks for that. I am gathering that I should at least get the T-5. So the T-5 fits the 289 if I can find one, which is what I would like to do. The thing is is that I have the automatic tranny. But for now I think I will stick with the 200 I-6 until I find a 289.
Thanks for the tips and tricks you all have donated.

Here is another article you might want to read if you want to spend the money to heat up that 6 some.
