Default Front End Problems

Hey guys, first let me start by saying hello to everyone. I have a 1971 Mustang Coupe. It has a 351 Cleveland 4V with top loader 4 speed. My problem is... the front end on this car is giving me problems. The steering wheel has to be held about a quarter of the way to the left to make the car go straight down the road, at high speeds the car swerves on its own and the front tires are becoming bald on the insides. I have since replaced the shocks but this hasnt helped much. I am thinking the front springs have given out but I am wondering if there is much more to it than that. Can anyone give some expert advice and help me out? I am trying to figure out how much its going to break me to get her fixed up for the summer months. Thanks for your help!![8D]

Given the age of your Stang, I would think a complete replacement of bushings, ball joints, and tie rod ends are in order, for all the front end components, upper arms, lower arms, spring perches, etc.

Anyone else got any ideas or is this the unwanted path I am most likely going to have to travel?

Just rebuild it. It'll cost you somewhere between $400 and $700 in parts, and a weekend of your time. Stop with the cheap fixes and do it right. By the way, be sure to lube everything before you install it sometimes it is impossible to do so after its in the car. Get a good alignment and your done.

I just purchased a 1971 mustang coupe, with exactly the same problems. The people I have talked to say that the Tie Rod ends need to be replaced, possibly the idler arm, and it needs alignment. I will be taking my Mustang to a shop and having a free estimate for the front end. A quote from the previous owner for a complete rebuild of the front end was $800. If I only need the Tie Rod ends it will cost me about 150 to get it done by a shop when I provide the parts. Hope this helps...
