Another project finished. Rust in trunk
In my quest to search out and repair small surface rust spots in places we don't often inspect, I took out the trunk pad to find I had some there. So, I wire wheeled it to get the big stuff off, shop vaccumed out the dust, then hit it with a rust encapsulator. I waited a couple of hours, then hit it with a self etching primer. Tomorrow I will be doing some light sanding then hit it with the final color. Pic #1- Rust Pic 2- Wire brushed Pic 3 rust encapsulator dried Pic 4 - Primed

Nice work! You've heard the phrase...rust never sleeps! I'm trying to decide which rust encapsulator to use on mine. POR 15??? I seen some rustoleum in a gallon can for "super rusted surfaces". 25 bucks a gallon. I wonder.... I'm afraid to use everything as I REALLY only want to do this once. Well, other than those pesky inspections that yeild the ugly cancer within! Huh, right!

I used some of the rustoleum primer for heavy rust after putting on some Ospho etcher to neutralize the rust on the floor boards. Had read some reviews about this on other sites and appears that many people have used/liked the combo. Got both products at Ace Hardware. Just my 2 cents...
red under insulation is the restoleum primer..

Soaring..what "final" color are you painting the gas tank?

Yeah, I didn't have any POR 15 in my workshop, and since I would have to order it an wait a few days to get it, I went to the ACE hardware store locally and perused their rust encapsulator products. The one I chose is the Marc brand of Rust-Away. It has the tannic acid abd the glycol ether in it, so I should be good to go for a few more years.

How much time did you spend on this? at what point would it have been better to just buy a new tank? I've got my new tank painted and waiting for me to burn through the tank of gas before swapping.
Of course I had to put in a new sending unit too and investigate why my gas gauge doesn't work so I opted for the new tank since I had to drain the old one anyway....
