Default Shifter/Wiring

I can not seem to get the shifter to work on my automatic. The pin does not raise properly. This happened while in park and returning to the car it would not go out of park. I can lift it with ascrewdriver and slide it back and forth. There is a little right to left play. Any thoughts or schematics?

Cheapest place for a no hassle wiring harness? I am seeing them on E Bay for around $580????

i can't quite picture the pin you are refering to. Can you take a pic to show us what you mean?
In terms of left to right play, there are two bushes on the main shaft that wear and need to be replaced. They only cost a couple of dollars, and take about an hour to do. Makes the shifer stop wobbling around so much.

On the wiring harnesses. Make sure they come with the connectors already on them like the painless harnesses have. You might also want to check with a few Mustang vendors to see what they will charge. I just bought a tail light harness that runs from the dash to the rear for 79 bux from Dallas Mustang. And, it was exactly like the factory harness. Just plug and go.

The piece I am talking about comes out of the base of the shifter and locks it into a gear. When I push in the button it is not raising up so it can slide back through the gears. I can manually lift it up using a screwdriver.

yes they do. I know what your talking about. It's cable operated, and maybe the cable has broken. Does the pin or whatever it's called move at all with the button pushed? If not, it's probably the cable. The left and right play, are the shifter bushings. you need to replace them.

Ok now I get it. i thought he was talk something electrical when he asked for a schematic. He is just talking about the cable the runs down the shifter rod. Step one is take the shifter top off. There should be a little cam connected to the cable. Make sure that is all in place first.

Thanks, so what is the repair process for the cable?

The bushings are going in today...

I've tried a few times to fix them with no luck. You don't find broken cables very often though. I've always replaced the shifter

As silly as it sounds I can not figure out how to remove the handle assembly. There is no allen screw....

Pointers for the novice?
