Shoot, i cant remember what wire i spliced into.... Actually, i did it the very shady, incorrect way. I ran a wire from my fuse box over the steering column, to my radio. That is were i hooked up the tach as well. I just put a spade connector, and slid it in between one of the fuses.... i think the instrument fuse works. Then i used zip ties, and tied everything up. you cant tell what i did under there. BTW, it's hard for me to get under the dash, im 6 foot and 250 lbs.

Ford did us a big favor by putting empty taps all over the place. There are taps for hooking into the dash lights, door lights, accessory power, and B+. These taps all take the large nose bullet connectors.
You can pick up a Wiring schematic booklet that is pretty good for our year cars off ebay, or one of the Mustang parts houses pretty cheap. I'd highly recommend it, especially if you don't have the workshop manual. Not only will it tell you wire colors, it shows you fairly close to where you will find these wires and taps.

The next most important tool in your electrical bag should be a small friend, with really flexible hands and arms.

6' and 250 lbs, doesn't belong anywhere near the underside of a dash[sm=jawdrop.gif]

Why load the dircuit going to the Coil? What ever it pulls off of that circuit is juice that will not go to the coil. Why take a chance. I know the circuit will handle the load that is not the issue. The issue is drawing the voltage down going to the coil. There are a bunch of wires you can get key on voltage from. To easy to do. Hook it where you want but I wouldn't put it on the resistor wire.

You will find a lot of plugs for courtesy lights but those won't work. They only have power when you open the door or turn the dimmer all the way to the left. you need a dash ligh circuit

On the '66 there is no key-on (aka run position) tap. that is what the tach requires. Again, there is plenty of reserve, so you aren't really loading the "coil circuit" as long as you stay upstream of the pink resistor wire. The ignition circuit will carry 10A*+ with no voltage drop, and an aftermarket high out put coil pulls up to a max of 7A you still have up to 3A you can safely use with no voltage drop.
In 19stang66 case, he is installing a tach. That uses less than a 1/4A. So there is absolutely no issue, and in the case of the '65-'66 it is the correct thing to do.

See the light blue wire with the tape on it? if that wire has a red stripe that is the one that is a dash light tap for hooking up guage lights. Looks like someone cut off the end. Too bad, because that originally had a place to plug in three wires. So you you might want to make up a "Y" for it so you can add other gauges down the road and have a place to plug in the lights.

If that light blue wire does not have a red stripe, it's not the one. Look up by where the pink wire is plugged into the red wire. There will be a light blue wire with a red stripe, and unless someone has hacked that one too, it should have a flat rubber end with three holes that are female bullet connectors lined up in a row.
