Default cowl air flow?

hi,
i was wondering if, with the defroster vents on, does fresh air flow out of the vents with the heater motor off?

it seems like a dumb question, but i'm repairing my lower cowl panel right now. i wont be reinstalling the heater box/motor, and if fresh air only comes in with the heater/ac running then i will just patch over the two cowl vent holes.

thanks for your help,
carl.

as far as i know, there is only one blower motor and it will be one regardless it you have the heat or a/c blowing. not 100% sure cause i have non-a/c'd car.

the cowl is your only fresh air inlet, save for your windows, unless you just open the cowl and let the air from the engine bay come in, not a good idea tho.

clu7ch,
i think i worded my question like an idiot.

i was wondering if fresh air came in through the cowl with just the vent on and not the actual blower motor being on.

i'm not super sure, but i don't see why not, unless you have a cowl cover like i do, i don't see why the air wouldn't come thru. try driving around with it set the way you just said and feel for the air coming thru. that's my only advice here.

The air swirls around inside the cowl and exits out in front of your door until you open the fresh air vent. That is assuming you have the heater off.

It is a rather crude and simple mechanical operation. The heater and defroster controls are named from left to right..... Heat-Temp-Def. If you have them all three in the up position, and the blower switch all the way to the left, it is not on. If you put the Heat **** all the way down, and the Temp all the way down, you will get maximim heat. If you raise the Temp up a tad, you will get less hot water running in the box, giving you less heat. If you put the Defrost know all the way down, you will channel all the hot air to the windshield via some flex hoses, and the air comes out the grid on the top of your dash on each side of the radio speaker. You can have both heat and defroster at the same time by putting those two ***** about halfway down. Now, you will not get air unless you turn on the fan motor by sliding the switch to the right. So, to answer the original posters query, you will not get air coming out of the defrost vents unless you have motor switch on. But, you can get fresh outside air out of the defroster vents if the motor is on. The other fresh air vent is next to your emergency brake handle. When you pull that out, you get fresh air through the cowl. See the pics.

yours is easy too. the lever to the far left is the fan, up is high, down is low (i believe that's what it should be). the top left to right slider is your selector. in the pic you have it on max a/c from what i can tell, next one over is norm a/c, than off, dash and floor vents, just floor vent, than ice defrost and than defog. your slider on the bottom is cold to hot, left to right.

hope that helps
