Default Tranny Question

Here is the senario. I have a 67 289 with an auto tranny. Don't know exactly what version. This happens intermitently, sometimes when I park on an unlevel surface and I put it into park, the car will roll about a 12-18 inches before it completely stops. As it rolls it moves in a jerky fashion, it makes a clicking sound as it jerks almost like the teeth on the gears are catching. It clicks and jerks about 3-4 times and then it stops and stays put. It only occurs about 15-20% of the time. Today when I opened the hood the car moved back about a foot and stopped.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Doc, you most likely have a C4. And, you may not be fully engaging in Park. You may need to adjust the linkage so she goes all the way in Park.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. If I remember several years back I was having trouble shifting I think into reverse. A mechanic friend of mine adjusted the linkage. I guess I'll have to study up in the manual and adjust it again.

I have also started noticing another sound. I would best describe it as a metalic clicking sound like a taping, or kind of like if I flicked a wire and it tapped on metal. I will hear the clicking mostly when applying the brakes to slow down for a light or turn when the tranny downshifts. but sometimes I will hear it when I start to accelerate.

I guess these are some if the things to deal with when getting the old gal back on the road after several years off.

Thanks again for the imput.

BTW how do I tell what kind of auto tranny I have. If I remember right the tag on the drivers door should tell me. The ID tag on my drivers door was painted over, So it is a little hard to read the numbers as far as I can tell my vin is 7R01C224242 and the other codes are 65 A A(could be a 1) 2 A(or1) 21F 7A(or1) 0

I dont have my shop manual here with me so I'll have to wait to look them up.

this may help.

also try this

they may give you what you need to figure out what tranny is. like Glen said, it seems to be more of a linkage or selector problem.

I dropped the tranny pan to drain the fluid recently and from what I remeber it looked like the C4 on the picture from the raceabilene site

Thanks for the link.

I didn't check the FAQ to see if there is any instructions on linkage adjusting. But I did find these links from autozone.
