I just got a 289 '66 stang and when ever i start it up it takes about 5 mins before i can take my foot off the accelerator so it dosnt stall on me. i was just wondering if this was normal for old cars or what i could do to fix it, thanks to anyone with an answer.

Sounds like a cool car. Any pics?

Sorry I can't help you with the fuel problem. I'm a noob. Mine starts up fine though. Injectors?

maybe your choke is closed, and when you press the accelarator, it opens it alittle. That could be it. Thats probably it. or it just needs a good tune up. Since you just got it, i suggest changing the fluids, new wires, cap, plugs, and maybe a carb overhaul....

Most likely your choke is not closed at a cold start. Take off your air filter element and pump the accelerator to the floor. Then inspect the butterfly. If it is not closed, then you have a choke problem. Get back after your inspection.

damn.... thats what i meant...... You probably have a choke like i do. How you adjust it is, on the passenger side of the carb, there is a big round black thing. There are 3 screws that hold the back thing down. Loosen these screws to turn the black thing. DONT REMOVE THE SCREWS.I believe you have to turn it clockwise to open the choke. unless something is broke, you'll see the choke plate open when you turn it.

i don't even need to say it. [8D]

you may also try some cleaner, it could be just gunk build up and a GOOD carb and choke cleaner should be able to fix that. i reccommend having the car running while cleaning. your motor will burn out all the gunk and cleaner so do it in a well vented area or outside.

a good tune is definatly in order also, plugs, wires, dizzy cap and rotor, set points and timing. if possible, lose the points, ask around for suggestion on which new dizzy to get to lose the points. change the fluids and check the trans and oil for a burnt smell. this is not always a devistating sign, but usually a sign of abuse.

usually s problem as you have described her is related to a bad carb, a rebuild (or brand new one) may be in order here.
