Default preservation before customization

so ive been faced with a problem in fixing up my 66 mustang. what is the right way to go into fixing and putting time into it. keep it all original parts or to go ahead and make it mine by customization? i just really want to know what you guys think about it and what would be the best way to go with it. thanks.

The first thing to consider is what you really want to do with the car. If you are set on restomod, it makes no sense to replace components with stock replacements only to change them later.

My personal m.o. has been to get the car running and operating as safely as possible first and then consider mods. Also, I have found that I get more accomplished and more satisfaction out of compartmentalizing my projects and focusing on one area until it is done. Otherwise, you tend to jump around and it seems like nothing ever gets finished. On my most recent mustang, a 67 hard top, I decided to keep it original as possible being it was all original when I got it. My first project was engine and engine compartment. I will then go to brakes, then suspension and steering, then interior and lastly body and paint. It is hard to stick to the plan though, you get tired of something and want to do something else. But I have found that I am making more progress by sticking to the plan.

I personally feel that it is best to get the car operational first and then consider what mods or upgrades you want to do. It makes no sense to put in a big cam and headers when the brakes don't work. Get everything in good working and then ad tasteful upgrades. at least you can drive it while working on it then. Just my .02.

Good luck

Research a little and look at other people's cars. What do you like? Is originality important to you? Speed? HP? Safety? What are your priorities? Your car is a way of expressing yourself so do what you think is coolest

If it is a straight, clean and rust free car, I would keep it original. It is cheaper to put it back to originality and you preserve it as the classic that it is. However, if it is a rust bucket, then do with it as you will. And, as mentioned, get it in good safe driving condition before you start with the mods.

The first thing you need to do is to get that rust on your door fixed.
