Well, my thought on that is this. If you're going to pound the **** out of it at the track, then go with a nine inch. If you're just going to have a street car then stick with the eight inch as I stated above. I know guy's with an upgraded 8 inch that never had problems. But, they are not track beaters.

I hear you. However, I broke both rears on the street power shifting second gear. Ford put nines behind HiPo's and 351's and larger for good reason. N/M

Power shifting? Then you are racing it. A 9 inch will serve you better, but an 8 inch is plenty for a street car with up to 400 HP, and the guy behind the wheel knows how to drive it without beating the crap out of it.

Um... no I wasn't racing it. If you guys believe an eight inch will handle 400 bhp, I guess you really know your stuff and who am I to disagree? I suppose me and all the other guys out there who have puked eights just dont know how to drive or maybe we just beat the crap out of our vehicles. I'm really glad you set me straight, I guess I'll pull the 9 out of my 69 and replace it with a bullet proof 8. Right. Just one thing bothers me though, why did Ford put nines behind every Mustang with 271 bhp or more when the eight is good for 400 bhp? You act like anyone who switches to a nine in a street car is an idiot. I don't recall saying or inferring in any of my posts that guys that run 8 inch rears are jerks. Oh, and Soaring some of us old farts still powershift now and again. And some of us, like me have an automatic with a stout shift kit and R-servo that bags second gear hard enough to chirp the tires.... on the street. I for one like to know that I'm not going to leave my diff in the road if I feel like having a little fun. Nevermind, this is like the big block/small block, C4/C6 debates and I've had enough.

That's good Jerry. If you feel like you need a 9 inch with the way you drive, then go for it. No argument here. However, just remember that no matter what equipment you have, all parts have limitations. If you constantly race the car, things are gonna break. Be prepared to pay the piper for your fun.

Just for the record, no one said the an 8 was better than a 9. What was said was, you can rebuild an 8 inch to withstand up to 350 hp with no problems. I have a 289 that has about 230hp and a C4 with a shift kit. I can chirp second gear all day if I want to and I have not had any problems with my rebuilt 8 inch.. If you're looking for a nice rear that can take the heat of a engine that is going to have up to 350, then an 8 inch will do just fine. If you're going to beat on it on the street or track on a regular basis, then you should consider going to a 9 inch. Lets not take this out of context..
