Default piston chatter

i got my engine down to the short block and it seems i got some piston chatter in my 3rd piston. Its got horizontal lines and vertical lines a little but to the left of the horizontal lines deep enough to fit your finger nail into. Im not running this engine for very long but i was wondering what causes this and how horribly bad is it. The engine is a 1966 289 with 120 000 miles on it.

i also need to know if anyone knows or has a link that would tell me the torque specks of the top end heads, intake and carb.
thanks in advance kurtis

Default RE: piston chatter

I had the same thing on my pistons. Vertical wear. I read you can sand them down but if you already have the chatter, it's too late. As was for me. I did sand them down but with clearance like .006, it was too much. Causes "piston slap". I've done a bunch of research and most say it is ok if it goes away when warm. Just annoying. Me, I'm replacing the pistons and rings. I don't like thing that "work" even if they are not right. I like things right. Specs are in any Haynes type manual. Here they are. Also, I read about a trick on the heads. Torque them a bit more as when the intake is installed you have upward force. Not a lot but I think it was 5-10lbs more. I just went with the high end of the range. Everything else, I split 60/40 for the torque.

Heads 65-70
Intake 20-22
Carb ???
Exhaust 15-20
Rod Bearings 19-24
