Default distributor crap

I got a distributor from a 85 mustang that I'm putting in my 5.0 and I wanted to know what are those three wires for? I see a red, black and purple...I don't want to hook it up wrong so, I was wondering if I hook up the black and red to the negative and positive side of the coil..what happens to the purple wire? and what is it for? infact how should I hook it up?! lol

Well. I'm not exactly sure on that one what kind of diagram you would need but, if its like the old duraspark setup, then one is hot when the starter is engaged to retard the timing for easier starting, or maybe it was one out of the brain that did that. I don't really even know if you system is anything like a duraspark setup though.
