Default Voltage Drop

Hey Folks,

68 conv, 289 stock alternator. I get a siginificant voltage drop when idling. With headlights on, the turn signals will not blink. I expect a certain drop with all old cars, but what would you folks suggest for correcting this problem or should I just live with it?

First, make sure the alternator and battery and voltage regulator are up to snuff. Have the alternator and battery checked at a parts place. Make sure all your connections are clean, and that the battery is rated at the right amount of amps for your car. If everything is up to snuff and it still has those symptoms, you might consider going from a 70 amp alternator to a 100 amp alternator.

Thanks again, the battery is rated at 625 amp at 32 degrees, it is relatively new and cranks great. Will the the low rating have that much of an impact? Is the electrical system drawing from the battery when the car is idling? Thanks again for all your, I am new to this forum

You need a bigger battery. Take your alternator to a parts place and have it tested. If it is putting out 70 amps, then you are OK if you don't have some power pulling stereo equipment.
