Default What is this Tube?

What is the metal tube on a 65 289 engine that is in the back of the engine and runs up under the carb and then sticks out a bit on the right side. It has a little rubber cap on it that can come off.

Today, all was running smoot as silk, stoped at home. Then about 10min later i went to start the car and WOW!

It was like it was miss fireing and the timing was all off, the engine was literally rocking back and forth and there was a loud vacuum sound.

I freaked, shut her off. Then start her up, same thing. I new my oil and fluids were good, just check them yesturday, so I made a mad dash under the hood with it running to see what the *&%*

The hole engine was going nuts. when I followed the vacuum noise it lead to this tube, which I remembered had the cap on it. The cap was GONE.

So I stuck my finger in the whole and boom, the engine ran smooth as silk instantly. Well I was relieved. Then I though, where is that cap???? I really didn't want to be stuck not driving cause I can't find a cap and have to order one.

After searching the driveway for half an hour, I checked in every corner of the engine compartment, and FOUND IT!! yah.

Stick it on, BINGO. All is 100%.

So, what is this tube and why did the cap blow off when I started the car if it is under suction? Is it a release tube that is supposed to pop the cap if it needs to relieve pressure?

I taped it on with some electrician tape. Should I leave it so it can come off?

Thanks

i have one that goes to the manifold. It's connected and doesn't have a cap or anything. It must be rigged up on there somehow

Sounds like a vacuum line to me. Not sure what it's use is but that's a symptom of a major vacuum leak. Glad you were able to find it right away.

Ok, heres a pic of the tube. This is after I taped it on.
Its hard to get a shot of where it goes, but it attaches to the top of the back of the engine. Goes on an angle under the carb.

It is a vacuum tube but I have never seen one like that. Possibly for the vacuum modulator on the transmission and BTW that is sticking out the left side not the right side.

That is like saying port and starboard change depending on if you are looking forward or aft. It doesn't change. Port is port and starboard is starboard.

I am going to bet that this engine was a 70's smog engine
