There is no benefit to going to manual brakes. But for some reason my father who previously owned the car went to a dual resevior system and switched to manual brakes in the process. Not sure why, to be honest, he hadn't drivin the car in many years, and I think he forgot they had power brakes and just had a guy change all the brakes to new ones, but manual in the process.

I wouldn't recommend that at all, in fact, just because the brakes are brand new, I'm gonna keep them for a while, but once they need some work I'll be switching to power disc instead.

Well, it most likely was for the power brake booster, but at any rate it is a major vacuum source, and if not plugged it will make the engine run like you saw that it did. Take a picture of the whole engine. I see some red valve covers. Not a '65 289 if that is the original color of the valve covers. 65 had gold covers.
