Default 67 Mustang engine good?

Hi my dad just got a 67 mustang and we were told everything is stock but something isnt right its not GT but it has a GT steering wheel and dual exhaust yet it doesnt have a v-8 its got a 6 inline which I have never really looked into. Are they better than v-6? Is it possible for them to beat a v-8? any other benefits to these 6 inlines? and did they come stock with the 67's? if you guys got links to other similar threads or articles feel free to post them thanks. BTW if pics of the engine would help let me know.

Hey newbie, welcome to the classic section. You don't have a GT. You have a T code inline 6 cylinder which was a very common engine for the 67 model year.

There are a lot of things you can do to them to up the power but it will be hard to beat a v8. It sounds like someone may have already put a split manifold on it since it has dual exhuast.

well its a project car as it is so we will see but what about the manual tranmission? does that help me at all cuz my friend has a 68 stang with auto tranny and a v-8 289 no mods or nothing, I mean can I beat him? and is it worth fixing the inline 6 or getting a v-8? Im not really trying to race it in all honesty I just want to hear it roar and FEEL it go fast but not necessarily race at the track.

I dont think you'll beat your buds 289(unless you catch it tired), but the 300 straight six in my 65f100 now has 300,000 miles on it, latest head is off a 292-6(?) back in the day some guys at ford built 6's to race till they got 8's

Swapping an engine requires changing a lot of things such as all the suspension and drivetrain. May be a little easier to just start off with a v8 car. A stock 250 isn't going to beating much of anything on the road.
